The glorious history of Marlboro cigarettes began in 1847, when Philip Morris opened a shop in London's Marlborough Street. In 1902 Philip Morris founded a filial branch in New York. Originally Marlboro was launched as women's cigarettes, advertised with the slogan "Mild as May". That marketing policy failed in a while and Philip Morris focused the Marlboro advertising campaign to male audience, introducing the "Marlboro Man" advertising campaign that was able to increase sales by 5000%. During the same period, a series of magazines published information that linked smoking with lung cancer. In these conditions, Philip Morris launched the filtered variant of cigarettes in 1955.
By the mid-1980s, Marlboro was declared the best-selling brand in the United States and the Marlboro cowboy continue to be one of the most appreciated American cultural symbols.
